The Fool

The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, a small bundle over one shoulder and a white rose in hand, gazing up at the sky rather than down at the drop. A little dog leaps at his heels. He is numbered zero, the number of pure potential, the breath before the first step. He is not foolish in the sense of stupid; he is the soul at the very start of its journey, unburdened by what it does not yet know.

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck the Fool opens the entire Major Arcana, and everything that follows is, in a sense, his education. He carries almost nothing because he needs almost nothing, only faith and willingness. The card holds both the thrill and the risk of beginning: the freedom of an open road and the real possibility of the misstep. To draw the Fool is to be reminded that not knowing is not a reason to stay still.

Upright, the Fool is a clear signal of fresh starts and new chapters. Something in your life wants to begin, and the card encourages you to say yes to it with an open heart, even though you cannot see where it leads. This is the energy of the leap taken on faith, of trusting the journey before the destination is visible.
