Venus retrograde 2026: the dates, the shadow, and what it asks of you
Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio in early October and backs into Libra before it turns direct. Exact station times, the full shadow period, and an honest guide to what astrologers read in it.

Venus stations retrograde on Saturday 3 October 2026 at 07:10 UTC, at 8 degrees of Scorpio, and stations direct on Saturday 14 November 2026 at 00:21 UTC, at 22 degrees of Libra. That is 42 days of apparent backward motion. All times here are UTC, so check the date against your own clock if you live far from Greenwich.
| Moment | Date and time (UTC) | Where Venus is |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-shadow begins | 31 Aug 2026, 14:44 UTC | first crosses 22 Libra |
| Stations retrograde | 3 Oct 2026, 07:10 UTC | 8 Scorpio |
| Passes between Earth and the Sun | 24 Oct 2026, 03:39 UTC | inferior conjunction |
| Backs into Libra | 25 Oct 2026, 08:57 UTC | leaves Scorpio |
| Stations direct | 14 Nov 2026, 00:21 UTC | 22 Libra |
| Returns to Scorpio | 4 Dec 2026, 08:15 UTC | leaves Libra |
| Post-shadow ends | 15 Dec 2026, 18:37 UTC | back at 8 Scorpio |
What is actually happening in the sky
Venus does not reverse. It orbits the Sun inside Earth's orbit and faster than we do, and roughly every nineteen months it catches up with us and passes between Earth and the Sun. Around that pass, seen from here, it appears to slide backwards against the stars for about six weeks. This time the pass itself, the inferior conjunction, falls on Saturday 24 October 2026. Before it, Venus is the bright evening star in the west after sunset; after it, Venus reappears as the morning star before dawn. The retrograde is the geometry of that overtaking, which is why it always brackets the conjunction.
The shadow is an astrological idea rather than an astronomical one. It marks the stretch of sky Venus will cover three times: once going forward, once backwards, once forward again. The pre-shadow begins when Venus first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct, and the post-shadow ends when it finally returns to the degree where it turned retrograde. By that measure this cycle runs from 31 Aug 2026 to 15 Dec 2026.
What astrologers read in it
In astrology Venus is the planet of what you value: love and affection, pleasure and beauty, money and what you are willing to pay for things, including in the emotional sense. A Venus retrograde is traditionally read as a review of those themes rather than a time to launch them. The common advice is to revisit rather than begin: relationships and exes resurface, old tastes come back, spending gets second thoughts.
This one begins in Scorpio, the sign of depth, trust, intimacy and what is shared, and backs into Libra, the sign of balance, partnership and fairness, before it turns. Read symbolically, that is a movement from the question "what do I really want from closeness?" to "is this fair, and is it mutual?". The first half tends to be described as private and searching, the second as a renegotiation of the terms.
The overlap with Mercury
Mercury turns retrograde on Saturday 24 October 2026 and direct on Friday 13 November 2026, so for 20 days, from 24 Oct 2026 to 13 Nov 2026, both planets are retrograde at once. Mercury's retrograde runs through Scorpio, the sign where Venus began its own. Astrologers tend to single out double retrogrades as the most reflective weeks of a year. We cover every Mercury date in our Mercury retrograde calendar.
Practical, and honest
Traditional astrology would tell you to avoid big aesthetic changes, new relationships and major purchases during a Venus retrograde. There is no evidence that outcomes are worse, and nobody should postpone something they need because of a calendar. What the period can be good for is deliberate reflection: what you are attracted to and why, where money goes, which relationships feel even. Treat it as a well-timed question.
How much any of this touches you depends on where Scorpio and Libra fall in your own birth chart, which is different for everyone born under the same sun sign. That is what a full reading works out.
The next Venus retrograde after this one begins on Wednesday 10 May 2028, in Gemini.
