Where the names come from

Names like Wolf Moon, Strawberry Moon and Hunter's Moon are folk names, collected from North American and European traditions and popularised by almanacs. They are not astronomical terms and they vary from place to place. Only two follow a rule. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, which is why it sometimes lands in October, and the Hunter's Moon is the one after it. A Blue Moon, in the modern sense, is the second full moon in a single calendar month.

What a full moon means in astrology

At a full moon the Sun and Moon sit on opposite sides of the Earth, so the Moon is fully lit and, in astrology, two opposite signs are pulled into focus at once. That is why full moons are traditionally read as moments of culmination and release: something that began around the new moon two weeks earlier comes to a head, and whatever has been building becomes visible.

For the signs in the table above, here is the axis each one is said to light up:

  • Taurus: security and comfort against change: what you hold on to, and what it costs.
  • Gemini: conversations and ideas against beliefs: the facts, and the bigger picture.
  • Cancer: home and family against work and reputation: where you belong, and where you are going.
  • Leo: self-expression against community: being seen, and being part of something.
  • Virgo: routines and health against rest and surrender: what to fix, and what to let be.
  • Libra: relationships and fairness against self: balance, and whether it is mutual.
  • Scorpio: depth, intimacy and shared resources against simple comfort: what you give, what you keep.
  • Sagittarius: freedom and meaning against the details of daily life.
  • Capricorn: ambition and responsibility against home and feeling.
  • Aquarius: friends, causes and the future against personal pride.
  • Pisces: dreams, intuition and compassion against order and analysis.
  • Aries: independence against partnership: what you want, weighed against what you share.

If you want to work with the cycle rather than read about it, our Moon guide shows tonight's real phase and what each of the eight phases traditionally invites. And the sign the Moon occupied when you were born, your Moon sign, is its own story: the Moon and Rising reading calculates it.
